6mm Gypsum Board

The 6mm gypsum board is our thinnest and most flexible ceiling board, making it the go-to choice for curved ceiling designs, decorative arches, bulkheads and lightweight ceiling applications. Its square edge profile screws directly to steel or timber brandering for a seamless finish that is ready to skim. Lightweight and easy to handle, it reduces structural load and speeds up installation significantly.

High Flexibility

Bends to radius ceilings, decorative arches and curved architectural features that standard boards cannot achieve.

Lightweight

Reduces structural load and speeds up installation — ideal for large-area ceilings and bulkheads.

Smooth Finish

Accepts skimming plaster or direct decoration once installed and jointed.

Square Edge

Manufactured to fit into a standard 7mm bishop or H-strip profile for a clean concealed edge.

What is 6mm board used for?
Knock-up ceilings, curved walls, bulkheads and ceiling linings. Lightweight and flexible for decorative arches and radius designs.
What screws and spacing do I use?
25mm fine-thread screws for steel brandering, 32mm coarse screws for timber brandering — at 300mm centres.
Is 6mm board tapered or square edge?
Square edge, manufactured to fit into a 7mm bishop or H-strip as standard.
Can I skim over 6mm board?
No — skimming over 6mm board is not recommended. The board is too thin to remain stable under the weight and moisture of wet plaster. A minimum of 9mm is required for skimming.

9mm Gypsum Board

The 9mm gypsum board is the South African industry standard for flush plastered ceilings and bulkheads in both residential and commercial projects. It has tapered edges that accept fibreglass mesh tape and jointing plaster, providing a smooth, crack-free base for skimming and painting. It is the most widely specified ceiling board in South Africa and the correct board for T37 concealed grid systems.

Industry Standard

The go-to board for flush plastered ceilings — widely available and understood by all trades across South Africa.

Tapered Edge

Compatible with jointing systems for crack-free, seamless joints between boards.

Ideal Span

Performs at 400mm centres on T37 or T32 steel grid systems without deflection.

Superior Strength

Greater impact resistance than 6mm board — suitable for offices, schools and upmarket residential ceilings.

Can 9mm board be used on walls?
No. For walls, 12mm or 15mm boards are required. The 9mm board is specified for ceilings only.
What is the maximum span for 9mm board?
400mm centres on steel or timber brandering and T37 grid systems.
Is 9mm board suitable for tiling?
No — it is too thin for tiling. Use 15mm Moisture Board as a tile backing substrate.
How do I finish 9mm board joints?
Apply fibreglass mesh tape, fill with jointing plaster, skim the full board surface, sand smooth and paint.
How much board do I need for a 4m x 4m ceiling?
4×4 = 16m². Using a 3.0m×1.2m board (3.6m² per board), 16m² ÷ 3.6m² = 4.44 — so you’ll need 5 boards, allowing for wastage and cuts. Bring your dimensions and we’ll calculate the exact quantity at no charge.
